影片根据亨利希·曼恩的同名小说改编。讲述1563的法国，新教徒和天主教徒因为土地和信仰的宗教战争。新教的首领纳瓦拉·亨利在巴黎组织武装，以对抗强大的天主教徒，他的母亲，法国王太后凯萨琳·德·美第奇。公元1572年，信仰天主教的王室为结束战争，决定与新教徒的首领纳瓦尔国王亨利联姻，身为国王妹妹的玛格丽特公主，自然成为了政治婚姻的牺牲品。婚礼在巴黎举行，玛格丽特嫁给了纳瓦尔的亨利，就在众人欢庆婚礼之时，巴黎城所有的钟声都敲响了，在凯萨琳王太后的策划下，一场针对新教徒的大屠杀拉开帷幕，整个法国血流成河，这就是西方历史上著名的惨案——“圣巴托罗缪之夜”。后来又经过数年的战乱，亨利成为了波旁王朝的开国之君——亨利四世，玛格丽特也从法国公主变成了法国王后，史称玛格丽特皇后。然而这对新人从未真正相爱过，他们各自都有情人……
